Street Legal and Godawful Fast, Too

Gary won his title at the first annual Ohio’s Fastest Street Car Shootout at Norwalk Raceway Park this past April by making consistent low 8-second passes at 171- plus mph. The Vette is licensed, insured, and has passed an Ohio State Highway Patrol inspection. "I drive the car everywhere!” Gary told us. “I put about 1,000 miles a summer on it.”

588 Cubic Inches of Homebuilt Rat

Gary is well known in his hometown of Westlake, OH for building hot street and race engines. His 588 cube big block is a prime example. The 14:1 compression, .090" overbored 502 has a 4.5 inch stroke crank, Crower .725"/.720" lift Crower roller cam, fully prepped Dart Pro 1 heads, and a Holley tunnel ram with twin Dominator carbs. With the NOS Pro Fogger system on kill, the motor can put the Vette deep into the 7s.

It Hooks

To make sure the Vette could hook, yet look as stock as possible, chassis man Gary Reese built the tube frame and 12-point cage in the car—no mean feat. A Dana 60 axle hangs from a four-link. Up front is a Strange strut setup. Reese even put a big 18 gallon fuel cell in the stock tank location. “I can put the pedal to the wood and the car will go straight, even it wheelspins,” Gary says.

More Comfortable Than It Looks

While the cockpit looks race-car spartan, it’s actually pretty comfortable (we know, ’cause we got a ride). Gary added carpet, padding, and sound deadener to keep noise and heat down. The dash is stuffed with Auto Meter gauges, and the Hurst Quarter Stick is attached to a built Powerglide with a Hughes 4,200 stall converter.

It’s Stock—Really

The Corvette’s body is as stock as the day it was popped out of the mold in ’65. It’s darn heavy, too, but Gary wanted the car to look as stock as possible, even if it cost him performance. He kept the stock door handles, emblems, windshield, and rear glass, and painted the car himself in his home garage.
